Edge banding tape The edge banding tape is the strips used by the edgebander machine for protecting, decorating, and beautifying the section of wooden boards. The PVC edge banding tape is widely used in furniture, office, kitchen utensils, teaching equipment, civil laboratories, etc. Its thickness ranges from 0.3mm to 3mm, and width from 12mm to 80mm. Its main features include smooth surfaces, no foaming, no stretch marks, moderate gloss, smooth surface, uniform thickness and width, reasonable hardness, high elasticity, good quality, and strong wear resistance.
Function introduction of edge banding machines
Most automatic industrial edge banding machines on the current market can realize basic 5 functions. These functions include gluing and banding, end cutting, trimming, scraping, and polishing.
Basic functions: Gluing and banding: There are six pressing wheels (1 big + 5 small) to press the banding tape after applying hot melt glue. It ensures no sliding and firm sticking of the banding tape. The cylinder controls the opening and closing of the glue pot gate to ensure the stability of the glue quantity and uniform thickness.
End cutting: This function aims to cut the excessive edge banding tape at both ends of a wooden board. It is realized by saw blades driven by two sets of high-speed motors. The end cutting unit of an edge bander generally has two types: ordinary end cutting and high-speed double guide rail end cutting. There is a cylinder (with 2 pressure regulating valves and 1 pressure relief valve) to help stabilize the pressure.
Trimming: The function aims to use a trimming knife to remove the excess edge banding material above and below the edge band of the plate. It includes rough trimming and fine trimming processes, with the major difference lying in the different shapes of the trimming knives. A cheap edge banding machine may only have the rough trimming function. Correspondingly, the banding effect will not be too delicate and smooth.
Scraping: The edge bander can also scrape off the corrugated traces generated during the process of curve edge banding. And it can ensure that the edge banding of the plate and the surrounding parts are smooth. Now, flexible scraping is very popular. Its scraping effect is very good, and it does not hurt the edge band or the board.
Polishing: The function of polishing is to polish the burrs and residual glue lines of the panel to make the banded edges smoother. It is realized by a cotton polishing wheel.
Upgraded functions: Pre-milling: This function is mainly to modify the uneven plate or the ripple, burr, or non-vertical phenomenon caused by the cutting saw. The purpose is to make the plate sealing boundary surface smooth to make the edge banding tape and the plate fit closely. Thus, it can achieve a better edge banding effect. This is a function added before the gluing process.
Profiling tracking: It is also called the corner rounding function. This function aims to round the banded corners to make them smoother and less sharp. Our self-designed tracking function and gas path design make this function more stable and precise.
Cleaning: It aims to clean the residual glue in the glue pot to make the edgebander machine more pretty.
Slotting: It can directly groove the wardrobe side panels, bottom plates, etc. And it can also groove the aluminum edge of door panels, reducing the process of panel sawing.
Pneumatic adjustment of cutter: This function is conducive to replace the panel type, panel thickness, and banding tape. It allows the operator to adjust the edge band thickness from the screen directly.
Upper glue pot: By default, the glue pot of the wood edge bander is located in the lower position. It supports the use of multiple types of hot melt glue. The most commonly used glue is EVA glue. But if you want to use PUR glue to band your cabinets, you may need a upper glue pot edge bander machine.
Double glue pots: Double glue pots allow you to use two different types of glue for your cabinet edge banding. It saves much time frequently cleaning the glue pots when you use glue of different colors.

How to operate an edge banding machine?
Although the automatic edge banding tape machine has a high level of automation, operators still need to pay attention to some matters during operation. The following steps describe the general operating procedures of an automatic CNC edgebander.
- Clean the wood edge bander and the workplace, and check whether the vacuum system works normally.
- Check whether the glue in the glue pot is sufficient and clean; if not, add glue appropriately according to the dosage.
- Adjust the position of the auxiliary support rod according to the length and width of the board.
- Properly adjust the distance between the upper wheels and the lower conveyor based on the thickness of the wooden board. Make sure the boards are pressed reliably without damaging the surface.
- Adjust the glue amount to make sure of uniform and sufficient gluing.
- Connect the air pipe and keep the air pressure stable at 6 standard air pressures. Check whether the air pressure of each part is normal and the ventilation is good.
- Make sure the power supply is normal. Turn on the machine to see if the edge banding equipment runs normally. Select the relevant functions on the control panel.
- Put the edge banding tape in position and adjust each width limit position of the banding tape. This is to ensure that the banding tape can pass through each position smoothly without being pressed too hard. Put a wood panel on the conveyor belt and push it forward slowly.
- Check the banding result of the first finished product and adjust relevant parameters accordingly.
How to ensure the good gluing quality of edge banding machines?
In simple terms, the banding process is to stick the banding tape to the side surfaces of a wooden board with glue. So, the essential part of an edge banding operation is the gluing process. It should be uniform and continuous so that the edge banding tape can be fully glued to the board surfaces. Then how to ensure good gluing quality? What factors can affect the gluing effect? The following descriptions may give you some hints.
1. Set the temperature range of the hot melt glue reasonably.Hot melt glue on the market is conventionally divided into high-temperature glue, medium-temperature glue, and low-temperature glue. The automatic edge banding machine generally uses high-temperature glue. And the temperature is generally 190℃ and above. Usually, edgebander manufacturers will give a temperature range, for example, 190-220℃. But how to decide which temperature is the most suitable?
Let's set a temperature first, for example, 190℃. Then see how well the hot melt glue flows when the temperature reaches the set value. If the viscosity is still too high, it will easily lead to poor flow and slow replenishment of glue. Besides, it is like to cause insufficient gluing when banding long boards. At this time, you need to continue to increase the temperature and observe the viscosity of glue at any time.
When the glue is too thin, it flows very fast. So the glue shaft is not easy to hang glue, which will also lead to insufficient gluing of the board. In this case, decline the temperature gradually until getting a suitable viscosity.
To sum up, the temperature of the hot melt glue has a great impact on the gluing results. In addition, the glue temperature shall not be set randomly.
2. The speed of the glue shaft and conveyor belt shall be synchronized.Different edgebander manufacturers choose accessories and reducer motors with different quality. So it is very easy to cause the glue shaft speed and conveying speed not synchronous.
In the event that the speed of the glue shaft is fast, the speed of glue application will be fast. Then it is easy to accumulate excess glue on the edges. This not only pollutes the perimeter of the glue pot but also easily affects the subsequent banding process of the board.
If the speed of the glue shaft is slower than the conveyor belt speed, the gluing speed will be too slow. This will lead to insufficient gluing and slow glue replenishment at the back of the long boards during the banding operation. All these two cases will have a band effect on the edge banding quality.
3. Control the gluing amount based on the thickness of the boards.The gluing amount is usually adjusted to be smaller for thin and short wooden boards. Otherwise, it will accumulate excess glue on the edges, which will pollute the surface after the banding tape is pressed. However, the gluing amount is often adjusted greater to avoid insufficient glue replenishment and noncontinuous gluing.
4. Clean and care for the glue pot on a regular basis.It is likely to cause burnt glue due to the continuous high temperature when the glue pot is working. The glue will be black and hard. In addition, the burnt glue may stay in the glue pot after the impurities fall off. With the rotation of the glue shaft, it is easy to block the gluing hole and the glue amount control area, forming a glue surface fault, This has a great impact on the uniform glue application. So be sure to clean and care for the glue pot timely.
What's the difference between EVA banding and PUR banding?
There are three mainstream edge banding processes at present, namely, EVA edge banding, PUR edge banding, and laser edge banding. In fact, they are all related to the glue that the edgebander machine uses.
Laser edge banding requires the use of dedicated laser banding tape, which has a laser photoactivated coating layer at the back. The laser activates the coating layer and welds the banding tape to the board edges. So the laser edge banding process doesn't need any glue, which is pretty, firm, durable, and smooth. But the laser edge bander machine price is more expensive than the hot glue edge banding machine. That's also why it is not widely used in the furniture making industry.
EVA and PUR edge banding are the most common wood edge banding processes in the mass production of various cabinets. What are they and what are their differences?
EVA edge bandingEVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) is currently the most commonly used hot melt glue in the edge banding industry. It is in the form of solid white granular beads, which turn into liquid glue after being heated at a high temperature. The edge bander machine uses EVA glue to cohere the banding tape and the board edges.
Advantages of EVA edge banding:
EVA glue is relatively cheap and has low requirements on the banding machine and work conditions. At present, more than 85% of the whole-house custom furniture factories use EVA to band the edges because it is simple and cheap to make. It is used to band various wood materials and banding tapes.
Disadvantages of EVA edge banding:
However, the EVA banding process often uses a large amount of glue, which is likely to cause excess glue. Besides, there is an obvious glue line on the connection part of the banding tape and the board edges. The appearance of the glue line has a close relation to the edge banding quality. Good edgebanders will make narrow and smooth glue lines.
What's more, EVA glue will melt again if the temperature is higher than 70℃. Thus, the banded edges are likely to crack or break.
PUR edge bandingPUR hot melt glue is an adhesive without any solvent or solution. PUR banding process also adopts the heating, glue applying, and pressing method to band the wooden boards. But its adhesive is stronger and the glue line is thinner than EVA banding. In addition, the amount used for banding the same board is less than half of that of EVA banding.
Pros of PUR edge banding:
PUR edge banding is not easy to be affected by temperature since PUR banding is an irreversible process and is reinforced by moisture. The PUR glue has excellent resistance to cold, heat, water vapor, and chemicals, making it ideal for long-term use.
What’s more important, the PUR banding has very narrow glue lines. So the edge banding result is quite satisfactory.
Cons of PUR edge banding:
The cost of PUR glue is 3 to 4 times higher than EVA glue. Besides, the PUR banding process requires a special wood edge banding machine with an upper glue pot. The upper glue pot automatic edge banding machine price is slightly higher than the ordinary edgebander machine with a lower glue pot. To sum up, PUR edge banding has a higher initial investment on edge bander machine and higher production costs. So small shops usually don't use PUR edge banding.
How to maintain an edge banding machine?
1. Keep the position of each functional unit of the edge sealing machine clean.
For example, excess glue is often found near the glue pot, which can directly affect its normal operation when it gets onto other parts and solidifies. In addition, the pre-milling, end cutting, trimming, and scraping operation will generate a large numbers of wood chips, banding tape, etc. Excessive accumulation of these chips will directly affect the sliding and rolling bearing or other parts. Therefore, be sure to clean up the excess glue, edge banding chips, and wood chips after every shift.
2. Regularly check the operating parts of the wood banding machine.
Regularly check the sound and temperature of each running part of the PVC banding machine. Remember to lubricate the exposed bearings and parts regularly.
3. Maintain proper workshop temperature.
The room temperature of a fully automatic bander machine should not be too high or too low during the working process. Too low temperature will cause the oil to freeze and the machine can't run normally. While too high temperature will easily cause inconvenience of heat exhaust, thus causing damage to the motor.
4. Check the cables and wires on a regular basis.
Regularly check the cables and wires for significant bending or damage in motion. This can also easily lead to unstable current transmission and damage to the motor.
5. Check and timely replace the worn cutters.
Regularly check the wear of each cutter of the plywood edge banding machine. And replace it in time if there is serious damage or wear to the cutter.
